Let’s give this another try

Posted by admin on July 8th, 2008 — in Spinning

Tour de Fleece 2008 is underway, and I have actually done some designated spinning. The challenge this year is to “spin from stash”. I have a lot of spinning fiber in my stash. Last year, my goal was to spin a little every day, and we know how that turned out. I also have a […]

Tour de Fleece

So far, not so good. As of yesterday, I’ve managed to spin exactly one day of the four. I did spend about 1.5 hours on Sunday, pre-drafting and spinning the second half of a Franquemont Sock Batt.
Oh well.

This Bud’s for you

I’ve been told, very kindly, that I need to post to this thing. So here I am.
I’ve been knitting a lot with yarns new to the shop, or new to me. I’ve made a high-necked tee with Ella Rae Silkience from KFI (continuing my raglan study), and a cardigan with On Line Luna from […]

It snew!

About 15-18 inches worth, in fact.

The whole community has been shut down for the last 36 hours. The university canceled classes yesterday, for the first time since 1979 — and then canceled today’s classes as well. Some businesses are opening later than usual today, now that the snow has stopped falling and the wind […]

What I do when I’m not knitting

(which, admittedly, isn’t often).
Here are photos of a coverlet I finished yesterday (click on the title above to see them). The blocks were cross-stitched by my late mother-in-law. I set them in pieced sashings, and backed the coverlet with double-faced flannel. There is no batting.

I also embroidered and added a crocheted edging to the […]

Patterns currently in development include:

Suit Yourself Raglan - templates for short-sleeved tops, using your yarn/gauge, with neckline options
Bias Vest - diagonally-knit panels, minimal assembly
Cabled Jacket - worsted weight, with shawl collar
One of these days I will get back to the Hardanger patterns, […]

YO! Holes, and How to Make ‘Em

Posted by admin on August 19th, 2006 — in Knit tech

Sometimes you need to put holes, or eyelets, in your knitting. These holes are generally created by the “YO” (yarnover).
British instructions are more explicit about the precise motions required to create a YO hole than are American instructions. American patterns usually just say “YO” and expect the knitter to know what to do in […]

Lies about Knitting, No. 1

Posted by admin on July 27th, 2006 — in Knit tech

Pattern instructions for Intarsia (”color-block”) knitting almost invariably direct the knitter to “twist the yarns at the color change to prevent a hole”.
This direction is not only unnecessary, but misleading.
I find it convenient to wrap the strand of new color around the strand of the previous color the first time it’s used (resulting in the […]

Gold? You decide.

Posted by admin on March 2nd, 2006 — in Miscellaneous

I didn’t finish my Olympic knitting project, but then I didn’t really expect or intend to.

I did, however, become comfortable with the two-color reverse-image technique, to the extent that I am able to see mistakes and then drop stitches down several rows to correct them.
And that’s the “gold” I was going for.
I’m […]
